Re: EMERGING PATHOGENS IN DRINKING WATER (2)
============================================
Emerging and re-emerging diseases seem to get lumped together, which
allows a reinterpretation of established water-borne pathogens under
a new and more exciting heading. With that caveat, I'd comment as
follows:
Cryptosporidium is far more common than Cyclospora, and is still
fairly new as a recognized disease agent, and the Milwaukee outbreak
showed that it has good potential as a water-borne pathogen.
If you include Acanthamoeba, you might include Naegleria fowleri. I
would also consider Dientamoeba fragilis and Blastocystis hominis; it
is becoming more acceptable to consider diarrhea as caused by these
species. Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, Ascaris, and
Baylisascaris might be included.
Good luck on keeping the water supply safe!
