[John Kellar replied to the following query ...]
Rumors of AI in the Yucatan:
I have heard lots of rumors that AI has made its way to the state of
Yucatan in southern Mexico. Can anyone out there confirm this? If so has
it hit the two big companies in Merida (Univasa and Sanjor) or is it just
in the smaller operations?
If AI has reached Yucatan, has there been any reaction from Central
America? Any speculation on the potential danger to the Central American
poultry industry?
Thanks for your help.

[John commented as follows ...]
I attended the OIE Regional Commission for the Americas meeting in Cuba,
March 26-29. By definition, the meeting dealt with such international
issues. Mexico in attendance. No reference made to AI except in terms of
its eradication in Mexico in June, 1995. At the same meeting, Guatemala
described itself as free of the disease.

The April 4, 1996 release from USDA APHIS VS emergency programs mentions the
presence of AI antibodies in 3,000,000 layers (75% of the commercial layers)
in Yucatan, and 105,000 in Campeche (50% of the population).
No mention is made of virus isolation.
