[The author is writing from Barbados - Mod.JW
I recently saw a patient who returned from Hawaii ten days ago and has signs
and symptoms suggestive of Dengue. At this point in time, there have been no
new cases of Dengue reported in Barbados or the wider Caribbean since January
1996 (our dry season). Acute and convalescent samples of sera have been ordered,
however these results would not be available for the next three months.
In the Caribbean two serotypes of Dengue have been identified since
1979, they are type 1 and type 2 respectively. (NB. there are four serotypes of
Dengue known.)
[Actually all 4 types have been seen there since 1979, but types 3 & 4 have not
been seen there in recent years - Mod.JW
I am interested in finding out:
(1)Are there any recent cases of Dengue in Hawaii?
(2)If so, which islands are affected?
(3)What serotypes have been implicated?
Anyone who can answer the aforementioned accurately, your input would be
greatly appreciated.
