Some ProMED-mail subscribers have written to recall the anthrax outbreak in
Sverdlovsk, USSR in 1979, resulting from an accident in a biological weapons
facility.
There is no evidence that any such facility is involved in the current
outbreak, and in fact localized anthrax outbreaks occur every year in the
countries of the ex-USSR (see references above), and in many other countries
also.
