On 28 Apr, according to NEXIS archives, there were reports that 30 persons
in one town in the Upper East Region of Ghana had died of anthrax after
eating infected beef. The dead included an entire family who had eaten from
a beef leg purchased locally. The town where this occurred is Nyongbare in
the Bolgatanga District about 815 km (510 miles) northeast of Accra.
Veterinary officials began vaccinating cattle immediately and warned against
eating beef, mutton and goat meat. (Agence France Presse)
On April 30th it was reported by the Ghanian News Agency that 80 had died in
the Upper East Region and 35 had died in the Upper West Region of the
country. An environmental health inspector has been held for disciplinary
action after it was reported that he had told people that the infected meat
was safe to eat (Ghana Broadcasting Company). Livestock vaccination programs
are in hand along with movement controls.
No further reports have been archived in NEXIS since the May 2. The last
prior reports of anthrax deaths in humans in Ghana in the NEXIS archives
were in May 1988 and April 1987.
