There have been 77 cases of pertussis in Maricopa County, Arizona, since
the start of this year. Health officials declared an outbreak of the
disease yesterday.
In contrast, only 8 cases were reported for the same period (Jan-June) of
last year, and there were 15 cases in all of 1996.
