HONDURAS
1200 CASES OF DENGUE, THREE CASES OF HEMORRHAGIC DENGUE
Tegucigalpa, Mar 11 (EFE).- The Honduran Ministry of Health has received
reports of 1200 cases of dengue fever and three cases of hemorrhagic
dengue so far this year, health officials reported on Thursday.
Last year [1998, Honduran health officials only reported one case of
hemorrhagic
dengue -- which is usually fatal -- over the same period, compared to three
cases this year.
Health Ministry Population Risks Director Jose Ochoa Vazquez said the
latest of the three hemorrhagic dengue cases reported was a five-year-old
girl, who lives in the town of Pespire south of Tegucigalpa, was
hospitalized and is recovering.
Vice Minister of Health Elliethe Giron said that at least 1200 cases of
dengue fever have been reported throughout Honduras, and several other
cases that may be hemorrhagic dengue are being investigated.
Other health sources reported that at least 20 000 cases of classic dengue
were reported in 1998.
