Glasgow hit by bug
-------------------
People in the Glasgow area are being warned to be extra vigilant after a
rise in the number of cases of a seasonal stomach bug, cryptosporidiosis
[infection due to the parasite _Cryptosporidium parvum_.
One elderly person has died, and another 66 have contracted the infection.
It is commonly carried by animals, but can be passed between humans, and
through drinking water.
West of Scotland Water is working with public health officials to trace the
source.
The company has confirmed that low levels of the bug [parasite were
present in the water supply from the treatment works at Milngavie on five
occasions last month.

[That large water-borne epidemics of cryptosporidiosis can occur when a
municipal water supply is contaminated is well known. The experience of
Milwaukee, Wisconsin (USA) in which more than 400,000 persons were affected
in 1993 is the most dramatic example. _Cryptosporidium parvum_ is highly
resistant to chemical disinfectants used in the treatment of drinking water
so filtration is important in removing the parasite from water. If anyone
has specific information on this report, we would be interested in knowing
more about the outbreak. - Man. Ed. DS
