With report of new cases of hand, foot and mouth disease [HFMD in Korea,
it might be wise for investigators to keep an open mind and to avoid
falling into what I called the "EV71 paradigm". I have written an article
entitled, "EV71 or Adenovirus? Hypothesis arising from two epidemics
spanning 1997-1998", in which I laid out reasons for believing that a new
strain of adenovirus was the more likely culprit virus for causing
deaths. It was published in the Newsletter of the Malaysian Medical
Association and obtainable at <

[Jack Woodall received notice of the paper mentioned above and tried to
obtain permission to post an abstract of it. When a few days passed and the
story seemed "cold" to us, we decided to not pursue this further. There has
been considerable controversy regarding the etiology of the severe
outbreaks of HFMD and apparent central nervous system complications in
southeast Asia, attributed by some to enterovirus 71 and to other to a
newly discovered adenovirus. Good people on each side of this contentious
argument are convinced of opposing viewpoints. Needless to say, we cannot
draw reasonable conclusions from this distance. Rather than comment one way
or the other, we recommend that interested readers go to the web site and
read for themselves Dr. Yap's paper and other papers. - Mod. CHC
