I read with great interest the report that _Theileria annulata_ infection
might spread in Britain .
Having worked with this disease for about 40 years, I don't see any reason
why this should be so. Accidental field theileriosis originating from
experimental laboratory infections occurred in another theileriosis free
country in Europe with no serious consequences.
Theileriosis only becomes established in areas, which are suitable for the
propagation of the disease. In Israel theileriosis occurs only in cattle
pastured on the range in defined areas, mainly in the north and does not
spread to other parts of the country, despite intensive cattle movements.
I am surprised at the measure to withdraw the milk of suspected cows from
the market, since _T. annulata_ is not transmissible by milk and cannot
infect humans.
I must mention the great contribution of the British Scientific community
to the research in theileriosis over the last two decades and this
unfortunate accident should not detract from their meritorious work.
