Dengue Fever and Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever in Honduras in 2001

At least 140 cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever have been registered and 9
people died from the disease in Honduras in 2001, the country's medical
sources said on Sat 29 Dec 2001.
Nicolas Nazar, director of Medical Attention of Tegucigalpa School
Hospital, said that 67 of the 140 dengue [hemorrhaghic fever patients
received medical treatment in this state-run medical center, the most
important one in this Central American country. According to reports coming
from Tegucigalpa, capital of Honduras, 82 percent of the confirmed dengue
hemorrhagic fever cases were minors under 15, Nazar said.
Dengue hemorrhagic fever has claimed the life of at least 9 people and
classic dengue fever has produced 6500 cases this year, sources of the
Health Ministry said.
In 2001, Honduran authorities carried out nationwide prevention campaigns
to eradicate the _Aedes aegypti_ mosquito, the vector of dengue fever.
Dengue fever is a painful disease characterized by headaches, rashes,
cramps, and severe back and muscle pains. It usually lasts about 2 weeks
after infection and can be fatal if treatment is delayed.
