According to the Agenzia Nazionale Stampa Associata (ANSA) website
<http://www.ansa.it/rubriche/topnews/2002-02-05_525486.html>, the patient

Possible case of human 'mad cow' disease in Italy
-------------------------------------------------
ROME: The first suspected case of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease
[abbreviated as vCJD or CJD (new var.) in ProMED-mail has been reported in
Italy, the Health Ministry said on Tue 5 Feb 2002. The human ailment is a
fatal brain-wasting disease linked to consumption of meat contaminated with
mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).
British scientists discovered BSE in 1986 and linked the disease to vCJD in
people a decade later. In Europe, vCJD has killed about 100 people, almost
all of them in Britain. Italy has identified 53 cases of BSE in cattle
since it discovered its first native case of mad cow disease in January 2001.

[The link between consumption of BSE-contaminated meat and onset of vCJD
has yet to be proven. In the past there have been several reports of
suspected cases of vCJD which have not been confirmed subsequently.
However, the occurrence of vCJD in Italy has a higher
probability of confirmation in view of the prevalence of BSE in Italy. -
