Second Case of Suspected vCJD Reported in Sicily
------------------------------------------------
A second probable case of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease [abbreviated as
vCJD or CJD (new var.) in ProMED-mail, the human form of mad cow disease,
has been diagnosed in a 56-year old man hospitalized in Palermo, Sicily,
said Dr. Luigi Pastore, Head of Neurology at Palermo's main hospital.
Italy's first human victim, a 25-year old Sicilian woman, was identified on
Tue 5 Feb 2002. The Italian Health Minister, Girolamo Sirchia, said he could
not rule out the appearance of more cases of the disease but added that
"talk of an epidemic is completely irrelevant." The first case was confirmed
in Britain in 1996, where more than 100 people have died.

[The older age of this patient is not typical of vCJD. vCJD has been
observed predominantly, but not exclusively, in people of younger age.
Further information on the basis for the diagnosis is awaited. - Mod.CP
