[There was OIE report of a suspect Foot and Mouth Disease case in
1997 in the zone where vaccination is practiced. It was eventually
found to be Bovine Virus Diarrhea-Mucosal Disease. The last previous
outbreak of FMD was in 1980.
There is no indication from this report whether Botswana's FMD-free
zone is involved. However, recent experience in Zwaziland and
KwaZulu Natal in South Africa suggests the possibility of extensive
vaccination and potentially slaughter to control the disease and
restore disease-free status. Over the past 20 years, Botswana
earned valuable export income by maintaining a FMD-free zone. If the
ability to export were lost, it would be a blow to the country.
Further information on virus type, vaccination status, and
vaccination zone location will hopefully begin to shed some light on
the origin of this outbreak. - Mod.PC
