Foot and mouth disease in Kuwait

See also: 13 July, 25 May, 11 May, and 27 April 2001, and 1 Sept 2000 (date
of last reported outbreak: Oct 2001).
This emergency report is based on information received on 18 Feb 2002 from
Dr Sultan Al-Khalaf, deputy director general, the Public Authority for
Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAF), Safat: report date: 13 Feb 2002.
One outbreak of foot and mouth disease, diagnosed with clinical and
laboratory evidence, has been reported in Wafra. It was detected on 2 Feb
2002, and the estimated date of first infection was 26 Jan 2002. The
affected population is Friesian cattle kept in an intensive dairy farm.
Total number of animals in the outbreak:
species / susceptible / cases / deaths / destroyed / slaughtered
bov / 17 / 10 / 0 / 0 / 0
The diagnosis was made by the Virology Laboratory at Al-Rai, using enzyme
linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for foot and mouth disease virus antigen
and antibody detection. The causal agent was found to be virus type O1 Manisa.
The source of agent/origin of infection is under investigation. Its mode of
spread is by direct and indirect contact. The affected herd had been
vaccinated against foot and mouth disease five months before and was
overdue for revaccination. No cattle had been introduced for over two years.
All the cattle in Wafra, Qurain, Kabd, and Sulaibiya that are due for
revaccination are being vaccinated. The Dairy Union at Sulaibiya has been
advised to take the necessary precautionary measures to prevent the disease
being introduced into the area.
[The virus type, O1 Manisa, is the same as the virus type of the previous
outbreak in April 2001. Just as in the last outbreak, a period of 5 months
has elapsed since the last vaccination when the outbreak occurred. Kuwait
previously had the PanAsia strain as far back as 1996. The virus type in
the sheep outbreak in 2000 was SAT2. This is a good example of a situation,
not uncommon, when more than one type of FMD virus circulates in a given
geographic area. For more information on virus types in the region, please
see informative comments of Nick Knowles from the Pirbright Laboratory in
the 25 April 2001 posting. - Mod PC
