The agricultural quarantine in Al-Haditha border post, northern part of
the kingdom have denied entry to a number of Syrian sheep after it was
found the sheep were infected with foot and mouth disease (FMD).
The director general of the animal and plant quarantine department of
the ministry of agriculture, Rashid bin Abdulazeez Al Khider, told the
Riyadh-based Al Eqtisadiah Arabic newspaper a total of 11 600 head of
Syrian sheep were returned after clinical and laboratory tests showed
they were infected with foot & mouth disease

[According to OIE's Handistatus, Syria reported FMD in bovines in
1998 & 1999. In 1999 there was widespread FMD in the Middle East
(see refs. above). We would like to receive confirmation or otherwise
of this outbreak. - Mod.JW
