Ebola Haemorrhagic Fever in Gabon/Republic Of The Congo: WHO Update 22
----------------------------------------------------------------------
GABON: On Thu 4 Apr 2002, the Gabonese Ministry of Health reported 65
confirmed cases, including 53 deaths. Presently, 53 contacts are being
followed.
The most recent cases have been reported in villages north of Mekambo and
resulted from contact with a gorilla, whose remains were found to be
positive for Ebola virus when tested at the Centre International de
Recherches Medicales de Franceville (CIRMF).
No disease activity has been reported since the end of Feb 2002 in the
Makokou area.
REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO: As of Fri 29 Mar 2002, 32 confirmed cases, including
20 deaths were reported in Mbomo district, Cuvette Region. There is no
indication of further disease activity in this district.
As of Mon 1 April 2002, a preliminary review of the epidemiological
situation indicates 25 confirmed cases, including 23 deaths, reported in
villages in Kelle district (see previous report:
<http://www.who.int/disease-outbreak-news/n2002/march/22march2002.html>. The
last confirmed case in the area died on Mon 18 Mar 2002.
The lack of community cooperation has hampered control efforts and impeded a
thorough investigation. WHO, Medecins sans Frontieres, International
Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and other partners in the
Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network
(<http://www.who.int/emc/global_outbreak_network.htm>) are continuing to
support the response.

[The detection of Ebola virus in the remains of a gorilla in the Mekambo
region of Gabon is the first positive result to substantiate the suggestion
that this and other Ebola fever outbreaks may be associated with the
harvesting of bush meat for human consumption. Further information on the
nature of the diagnostic test would be appreciated - Mod.CP
