Monthly Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Statistics; Tue 7 May 2002
-----------------------------------------------------------
The Department of Health issued on Tue 7 May 2002 the latest information
about the numbers of known cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. This
includes cases of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease [abbreviated in
ProMED-mail as (vCJD) or CJD (new var.)] -- the form of the disease thought
to be linked to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). The position is as
follows:

[Since the previous monthly statistics released by the Department of Health
on Mon 2 Apr 2002, the total number of definite or probable vCJD cases has
increased by a single confirmed vCJD case and 3 probable vCJD cases still
alive. In view of the long incubation period of vCJD, it is still too early
to predict the future trend. The figures suggest neither an imminent
dramatic rise in the number of vCJD cases nor a decline. - Mod.CP]
