[Since the previous monthly statistics released by the Department of
Health on Tue 7 May 2002, the number of deaths from definite or
probable vCJD has increased by 2, the total number of definite or
probable vCJD cases (dead and alive) has increased by one, and the
number of probable vCJD cases still alive has decreased by one. The
number of referrals has risen by 15.
In view of the long incubation period of vCJD, it is still too early to
predict the future trend. The figures suggest neither an imminent
dramatic rise in the number of vCJD cases nor a decline. - Mod.CP]
