Comment to the finding of Cryptosporidium in the Glasgow water supply
--------------------------------------
A note to say that Glasgow does not have the filtration required to filter
out Cryptosporodium. The members of the Water Board also are unaware that
boiling does not kill the "virus" (their term).

[The water from the Mugdock reservoir comes about 40 miles through iron box
conduits, one of the marvels of Victorian engineering. The water originates
from Loch Katrine (a granite basin) and in the past has never required
filtration. The current situation is that the water has been approved
again for human consumption and a filtration plant will be installed in due
course. In fact no case of illness was notified; the incident is the result
of a failure in communication. In fact, the ban on use of water for
drinking in Scotland is triggered at a 10-fold lower concentration of
Cryptosporidium than in England. In fact the level of Cryptosporidium in
the Mugdock reservoir water at its worst was below that of most potable
water in England. As of 8 Aug 2002, no reports of illness have been
confirmed by the Glasgow Health Board. - Mod.CP]
