Rift Valley Fever in Mauritania: Serological findings

(Date of previous outbreak of Rift Valley fever in Mauritania
reported to the OIE: December 2002).
Emergency report: Translation of information received on 16 Oct 2003
from Dr.Mokhtar Fall, Deputy Director, Department of Animal
Production and Agriculture, Ministry of Rural Development and
Environment, Nouakchott:
Report date: 15 Oct 2003.
Nature of diagnosis: laboratory.
Location: Keur Macene, Kobeni, and Kankossa.
Description of population: sheep/goats. Sentinel flocks for the
surveillance of Rift Valley fever to ensure early detection of virus
circulation.
Number of animals:
species / susceptible/ seropositive/ deaths/ destroyed/ slaughtered animals
ovine & caprine / 1200 / 16* / 0 / 0 / 0
* Number of sera that tested IgM-positive: Keur Macene (11), Kobeni
(4), Kankossa (1).
Diagnosis: to date, no clinical diagnosis has been established.
A. Laboratory where diagnosis was made: National Animal Production
and Veterinary Research Centre (CNERV(1)), Nouakchott.
B. Diagnostic test used: ELISA(2).
Control measures: screening.
(1) CNERV: Centre national d'elevage et de recherches veterinaires
(2) ELISA: enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.
