Patients, Nurse Diagnosed with Salmonella
-----------------------------------------
At least 30 patients and a nurse at a hospital in central Slovakia have
been diagnosed with salmonella, a news agency reported Tue, 9 Dec
2003. Another 90 patients have symptoms of the disease, but their test
results were not yet available, the state-run news agency TASR reported.
The infection was most likely caused by a hospital meal that contained eggs
that had not been properly cooked, said Maria Avdicova, an official with
the State Health Institute in Banska Bystrica, the city where the hospital
is located.

[Moral of the story: always cook your eggs. Salmonellosis is not an
infection that you want to spread nosocomially, as the elderly, debilitated
hospital denizens are exactly the group with higher morbidity and mortality
from this infection. I used to work in a Medical Center (that shall remain
nameless) that never served egg salad -- to prevent such an outbreak. I
always thought that good kitchen technique would work just as well. - Mod.LL]
