Enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) cases from an international sport event in
Sweden
-------------------------------------------------------
8 verified and 3 suspected cases of enterohemorrhagic _E. coli_ O157 VT and
VT2 (Verotoxin ) have been reported from different parts of Sweden. Each
individual participated in an international sports event, Gothiacup, (an
international youth soccer/football tournament -- for more information
please see <http://www.gothiacup.se/ie_index.asp>) in Gothenburg, Sweden
between 11-17 Jul 2004. A secondary case has been reported. The onset date
is between 17-24 Jul 2004 for the primary cases.
4 of the cases were hospitalized for a short period, and then discharged
without reports of any severe complications.
The primary cases were 14-20 years old and include one of the leaders aged
48 years old. Investigation of the outbreak is ongoing but so far no
source of the infection has been identified.
If there are reports of cases in other countries please contact Martin
Wahl (<martin.wahl@vgregion.se>) or Yvonne Andersson
(<yvonne.Anderson@smi.ki.se>).

[According to the web site
<http://www.gothiacup.se/eng/section2.asp?res=high> the tournament involved
1525 teams of 32 100 individuals who played 4320 games. 61 nations took
part of the 120 nations involved in qualifying rounds.
It is most likely that individuals from other countries will be involved in
the outbreak. ProMED awaits further information regarding potential
vehicles of the _E. coli_ O157. - Mod. LL]
[ProMED-mail would like to thank our colleagues in Sweden, Drs. Andersson
and Wahl for sending this report. We would also like to emphasize their
request to report information on additional cases of _E. coli_ O157
infection in attendees of this sporting competition to them at their email
addresses below, as well as to ProMED-mail for continued update on what may
be a multi-country outbreak associated with a sporting event. - Mod.MPP]
