Bad beef warning issued
-----------------------
_E. coli_-contaminated beef may be sitting in Calgary refrigerators, the
Canadian Food Inspection Agency warned yesterday, 7 Aug 2004. It is not
known how many packages of regular, lean, and extra-lean, ground beef from
Westfair Foods Ltd. are affected, but, if purchased between 12-21 Jun 2004,
don't eat it, said an agency official.
"We're going to continue to investigate to make sure no other products are
affected," said Garfield Balsom, officer of food safety and recalls.
The meat in question would have been purchased at local Real Canadian
Superstores, Real Canadian Wholesale Club, and Extra Foods, with
best-before dates between 15 to 24 Jun 2004. Super Valu stores, and Food
Fair outlets, in Whitehorse, Yukon are also included.
So far, 2 people in Manitoba have fallen ill with one person sent to the
hospital. Canadian Food Inspection Agency officials were informed of those
cases on 28 Jul 2004, and, on 7 Aug 2004, officials were able to trace the
source of the infection.
Alberta-based Westfair Foods is voluntarily recalling the affected
products, which have also been distributed in BC, Saskatchewan, the
Northwest Territories, Yukon, and in Ontario. Westfair Foods' supplier of
ground beef, XL Grinding, has also been contacted, said a Westfair spokesman.
"We have in place in our stores stringent procedures regarding the
receiving, handling, and storage of all products, including beef," said
Lori Stene. "We also have rigorous procedures and policies governing food
safety, food-handling, training of staff, and cleaning and sanitizing of
equipment."
Food contaminated with _E. coli_will not look or smell spoiled, "and if the
meat is cooked properly, no illness will occur," Balsom said.
