Meningitis toll touches 20, infected rises to 270
-------------------------------------------------
2 more deaths due to deadly meningococcemia have been reported in Delhi
since Wed, 11 May 2005, taking the toll to 20 while the disease has
afflicted 18 more people, raising the number of such patients to 270. The
deaths were reported today, 12 May 2005. One patient succumbed to the
disease in Lady Harding [Hospital] and one in LNJP Hospital in New Delhi.
Municipal Corporation of Delhi's director of hospital administration Dr JN
Banavaliker said that the most of the people who have died of the disease
had sought treatment at advanced stages of the disease. He added that the
disease has not attained an epidemic form, Dr Banavaliker said that the
number of confirmed cases have not reached epidemic proportions.
While health authorities in the city are maintaining that the city is
well-equipped to handle the situation, many people are complaining about
the shortage of vaccines. Meanwhile, cases of meningococcemia have been
reported from places like Moradabad, Ghaziabad, and even places in Rajasthan
and Bihar.
Lt governor BL Joshi had also convened a high-level meeting to take stock
of the situation, as the disease has been reported from other states as
well. Joshi, who reviewed the steps taken by the local administration, said
all efforts should be made to prevent the disease spreading any further.

[Life-threatening infection due to _Neisseria meningitidis_ usually
manifests as either bloodstream infection (meningococcemia) with or without
meningitis. Meningococcemia can be a very fulminant infection, progressing
from wellness to death within 24 hours, and it can be associated with
diffuse cutaneous and vital organ bleeding. It may also cause peripheral
symmetrical gangrene, which may result in one or more extremity amputations.
Since meningococal disease is endemic, if only sporadic cases were to occur
in other areas of the country, these may not be related unless more
information is known about the isolates. - Mod.LL]
