Bluetongue in Italy (Date of previous outbreak of bluetongue in Italy
reported to the OIE: November 2004).
Information received on 7 Nov 2006 from Dr Romano Marabelli, Head of
the Department for Veterinary Public Health, Nutrition and Food
Safety, Ministry of Public Health, Rome:
Report date: 6 Nov 2006.
Reason for immediate notification: first occurrence of a new strain
of a pathogen associated with a listed disease in a country or
zone/compartment.
Identification of agent: bluetongue virus serotype 1.
Date of first confirmation of the event: 15 Oct 2006.
Date of start of the event: 15 Oct 2006.
Location of the outbreaks: Cagliari district, Sardegna province.
Affected population: sheep.
Number of animals in the outbreaks: susceptible animals: 4602; cases:
267, deaths: 41.
Laboratory where diagnostic tests were performed: Istituto
Zooprofilattico Sperimentale, Teramo.
Diagnostic tests used: polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE),
seroneutralisation, antigen detection ELISA
Source of outbreaks or origin of infection: vectors.
Control measures undertaken: movement control inside the country; screening.
