Information received on 29 Nov 2006 from Dr. Romano Marabelli, Head
of the Department for Veterinary Public Health, Nutrition and Food
Safety, Ministry of Public Health, Rome:
End of previous report period: 22 Nov 2006 (see Disease Information,
19 [47], 830, dated 23 Nov 2006).
End of this report period: 29 Nov 2006.
Identification of agent: bluetongue virus serotype 1.
Date of 1st confirmation of the event: 30 Oct 2006.
Date of start of the event: 15 Oct 2006.
Clinical disease: yes.
Nature of diagnosis: clinical and laboratory.
New outbreaks: 42 new outbreaks on farms in Caligari, Sardegna
(Sardinia) were reported between 31 Oct and 22 Nov 2006. Four were
goat farms with a total of 780 animals, the others are sheep farms.
There was a total of 10 882 animals involved with 202 cases, 83
deaths.
Laboratory where diagnostic tests were performed: Istituto
Zooprofilattico Sperimentale, Teramoovi
Results: antigen detection ELISA was positive on 30 Oct 2006;
real-time RT-PCR and serum neutralization was positive on 3 Nov 2006.
Source of outbreaks or origin of infection: vectors.
Control measures undertaken: movement control inside the country; screening.
Treatment of affected animals: no.
Vaccination prohibited: no.

The data provided here indicates that this outbreak continues to
spread at a fairly good rate, but it is important to recollect that
the BT-1 virus is the causative agent, not the new BT-8 strain
occurring in Northern Europe. BT-1 serotypes have been recently
identified in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia as well. - Mod.PC]
