Representatives of the Mukdahan livestock office conducted disease
surveillance and disinfection of the poultry breeding area, after
finding several dead chickens around the Hin Ruea community in the
Tambon Sriburueng municipality, Mukhdahan province.

Villagers helped with the destruction of poultry and some ducks in
the affected area, as well as sprayed disinfectant in a one-kilometer
radius around it.

Specimens were collected for analysis by a laboratory in Khon Kaen
province and the results are expected within one week.

[Mukdahan province is one of 76 provinces in Thailand, located on the
border with the Savannakhet province of Laos. As per the above
report, the prompt prevention and control method in this area by
livestock officers and community people would help to alert
neighboring areas and provinces in Thailand and Laos to prevent the disease.

In a prior PRO/MBDS posting (Avian influenza - MBDS region (05):
Laos, Viet Nam 20070309.0836) there was mention of a suspected
outbreak of avian influenza in Savannakhet province in Laos. The
occurrence of a poultry die-off in the neighboring province of
Mukdahan in Thailand is highly suspect as due to avian influenza as
well. More information on the above mentioned poultry die-off in
Thailand from knowledgeable sources would be appreciated.
