Bird flu re-emerges in central Viet Nam, kills ducks
-----------------------------------------------
Bird flu has been found on a duck farm in central Viet Nam, the 1st
outbreak of the disease in more than a month, the government said on
Sunday [6 May 2007].
Tests showed the H5N1 virus had killed 160 ducklings in the farm in
Nghe An province on 1 May [2007], the Agriculture Ministry's Animal
Health Department said in a report. It said the 40-day-old ducklings
had not been vaccinated against bird flu.
By Friday [4 May 2007], another 90 ducks died in the same farm,
prompting health workers to slaughter the remaining 360 fowl, the report said.
The H5N1 virus has killed 42 people in the Southeast Asian country
since it re-surfaced in Asia in late 2003, but Viet Nam has had no
human cases since November 2005.
The virus flared up again among poultry in the south [of Viet Nam]
late last year [2006] and earlier this year [2007].
Last month [April 2007], the World Health Organization (WHO) urged
Viet Nam to accelerate poultry vaccinations and target more ducks in
its anti-bird flu campaign.
Waterfowl are a reservoir for the disease and can spread the H5N1
virus in their droppings as they roam through rice fields. Ducks
often show no symptoms of sickness, making it harder to contain the virus.
The Animal Health Department said 60 of Viet Nam's 64 provinces have
so far finished or nearly completed the 1st of a 2-phase vaccination
campaign that targets up to 90 percent of the country's poultry stock.
The virus has killed 170 people in 11 countries, most of them in
Indonesia and Viet Nam, according to the WHO.

[The most recent OIE report on avian influenza in Viet Nam was from 2
Apr 2007 when the outbreak in Cau Mau in the southernmost province of
Viet Nam was reported. (see
<http://www.oie.int/wahid-prod/reports/en_fup_0000005156_20070402_151130.pdf>).
This new outbreak is in Nghe An Province, the most northerly of the
central provinces in Viet Nam (see
<http://www.angelfire.com/co/hongnam/vnmap.html>; and
<http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/middle_east_and_asia/vietnam_pol01.jpg>
for maps of Viet Nam).
Viet Nam has been conducting vaccination activities as part of the
avian influenza control program. See
<http://www.oie.int/fr/info_ev/Other%20Files/Guidelines%20on%20AI%20vaccination.pdf>
for an information document on guidelines for avian influenza
vaccination activities.
Information on the vaccination strategy being implemented in Viet Nam
would be of interest including vaccine used, species targeted and
recommended age at vaccination. - Mod.MPP]
