The Ministry of Health in China has reported a new case of human
infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. The case was confirmed
by the national laboratory on 23 May [2007].
The 19-year-old male soldier, serving in Fujian province, developed
fever and pneumonia-like symptoms on 9 May [2007] and was
hospitalized on 14 May [2007].
There is no initial indication to suggest he had contact with sick
birds prior to becoming unwell. Close contacts have been placed under
medical observation, and all remain well.
Of the 25 cases confirmed to date in China, 15 have been fatal.

[In the original posting on this case (see Avian influenza, human
(04): China, RFI 20070526.1683), information on the geographic
location of the case was not provided. The above WHO report mentions
the soldier was from Fujian Province and does not mention other
locations of possible exposure, suggesting that the geographic
location of transmission of the H5N1 to the case occurred in Fujian
Province. Historically, there have been other H5N1 cases in Fujian
Province. In the early stages of the SARS (severe acute respiratory
syndrome) epidemic, there was a family that had traveled from Fujian
Province to Hong Kong, where all 4 family members had severe
respiratory disease (father, mother, son and daughter). The father
and son had H5N1 infections documented on return to Hong Kong; the
daughter died and was buried in Fujian Province, without laboratory
results, and the mother was reported to have had "parainfluenza
virus" (details on these cases are available in ProMED-mail postings
