The United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) has warned against
the worst outbreak of dengue in Asia in nearly a decade. Reports are
surfacing of thousands of people affected by the illness in
Singapore, Viet Nam, Cambodia and other Southeast Asian countries.
The worst hit country by this mosquito-borne virus is Cambodia, where
the disease has attacked about 25 000 people and killed nearly 300
children this year [2007]. According to WHO, the figures in Cambodia
are worrisome, as they are about 3 times more than the number of
cases for all of 2005.
Experts from WHO fear that the current outbreak could reach the
dangerous levels of the last major outbreak to hit Southeast Asia in
1998, when about 350 000 cases were reported in the region, including
nearly 1500 deaths.
Dengue fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) are acute febrile
diseases found in the tropics, with a geographical spread similar to
malaria. Dengue is transmitted to humans by the _Aedes aegypti_
(rarely _Aedes albopictus_) mosquito, which feeds during the day.

[In the last PRO/MBDS posting on dengue in Cambodia posted on 10 Jul
2007 (see Dengue - Cambodia (03): RFI 20070710.2197), there were
reports of a total of 14 986 cases with 182 deaths attributable to
dengue. In the above newswire, the total number of cases has almost
doubled to a total of approximately 25 000 cases with almost 300
deaths, both significant increases in 3 weeks time. As this is
"early" in the dengue season, reasons for concern are real. PRO/MBDS
would appreciate more information on the current dengue situation in
Cambodia from knowledgeable sources, including serotypes of the virus
involved in this year's (2007) activity.
