Ducks die en mass in southern Vietnam

A number of ducks in Vietnam's southern Tien Giang province have
recently died with unidentified causes, while bird flu is hitting
southern Tra Vinh province.
Some in a flock of more than 2200 unvaccinated ducks raised by 3
households in Go Cong Tay district died with such symptoms as swollen
head, drowsiness and paralysis, local newspaper Vietnam Agriculture
reported Thursday [20 Dec 2007].
Specimens from the dead poultry are being tested for bird flu
viruses. Local veterinary agencies have culled the affected fowl flock.
Bird flu outbreaks in Vietnam, starting in December 2003, have killed
and led to the forced culling of dozens of millions of fowls in the
country, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and
Rural Development.

Cao Bang discovers new bird flu outbreak

The Department of Animal Health in the northern province of Cao Bang
reported an outbreak of bird flu last weekend [15/16 Dec 2007] in
poultry bred in Ly Bon Commune, Bao Lam District. So far, 50 chickens
owned by 4 families have died from the disease.
The local authority said most of the poultry in the commune had not
been vaccinated against the H5N1 virus.
This year [2007], bird flu has appeared in the province since last
October [2007?] in 8 communes in the border districts of Trung Khanh,
Phuc Hoa and Bao Lam.

[Since the last PRO/MBDS update on avian influenza in Viet Nam on 14
Dec 2007 (see Avian influenza - MBDS region (54): Viet Nam, RFI
20071214.4025) it appears as though outbreaks have been confirmed in
both the northern and southern parts of the country (Cao Bang and Tra
Vinh respectively), suggesting that H5N1 activity may be increasing
now with the onset of cooler months. While the 2nd newswire mentions
that most of the poultry in the affected commune had not been
vaccinated, it did not specifically mention that the die-off involved
unvaccinated poultry.
With respect to the massive duck die-off in Tien Giang province
mentioned in the 1st sentence of the 1st newswire above, subscribers
should be reminded that Marek's disease had been confirmed in Tien
Giang and Long An provinces in November 2007, following massive avian
die-off beginning in October 2007 (see Marek's disease - Viet Nam:
susp., RFI 20071204.3911).
