Viet Nam: avian influenza situation - 28 Dec 2007
-------------------------------------------------
The Ministry of Health in Viet Nam has confirmed a new case of human
infection of H5N1 avian influenza. The case has been confirmed by the
National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE).
The case is a 4-year-old male from Son La Province. He developed
symptoms on [7 Dec 2007], was hospitalized on [11 Dec 2007], and died
on [16 Dec 2007].
Control measures have been implemented and close contacts have been
identified. All remain healthy and will continue to be monitored. The
source of exposure is currently under investigation.
Of the 101 cases confirmed to date in Viet Nam, 47 have been fatal.

A 4-year-old boy has died of bird flu in Viet Nam, becoming the
country's 5th reported victim of the virus this year, health officials said.
The deadly H5N1 virus was found in samples taken from the child. He
died after being admitted to hospital with high fever, state media reported.
The child is believed to have eaten chicken before falling sick in
the northern province of Son La.
Bird flu has killed 47 people in Viet Nam since 2003. Viet Nam's last
reported death from the virus was in August [2007] when a teenager was killed.
In another development the Vietnamese government said the virus had
returned to the Mekong delta in the south, killing hundreds of ducks
and chickens.
The H5N1 strain has killed more than 190 people since 2003, according
to WHO figures. Indonesia has been hardest hit, with 80 deaths.
Scientists fear the virus could mutate to a form, which could be
easily passed from human to human, triggering a pandemic.

[According to the WHO website, since 2003 there have been 101 cases
with 47 deaths (case fatality rate CFR 46.5 percent) reported from
Viet Nam. In 2007 there have been 8 cases and 5 deaths confirmed (CFR
62.5 percent). (See
<http://www.who.int/csr/disease/avian_influenza/country/cases_table_2007_12_28/en/index.html>.
Unless the chicken that was consumed by this child was inadequately
cooked, the likelihood that his infection was associated with eating
chicken is very low. We await further information on the
epidemiologic investigations surrounding this case, including
information on possible poultry die offs or exposure of the case to
backyard flocks of avians that may have been asymptomatic shedders of
the H5N1 virus.
