Dear friends,
Yes, the rash illness mentioned is hand, foot and mouth disease
[HFMD]. Normally, HFMD is highest in July through October. But this
year the number of cases have continued until January. We have warned
all provinces of this and have rapidly contained the outbreaks in
schools, child centers and nurseries.

[PRO/MBDS would like to thank Dr. Kumnuan for his rapid response to
the RFI (request for information) on the report of an outbreak of a
febrile rash illness in Mae Sai, Chiang Rai Province, Thailand. While
the etiologic agent is not known at present, the absence of reported
fatalities suggests that this may be related to infection with
Coxsackievirus. As mentioned in the earlier posting (Undiagnosed rash
illness, children - Thailand: Chiang Rai, RFI 20080201.0397),
geographically, Mae Sai is located in the extreme north of Thailand
bordering with Tachilek in Myanmar (see map at
<http://www.thaifocus.com/north/maesai.htm>). Tachilek district of
Myanmar borders with Kengtung district to its northeast (see map at
<http://orbat.com/site/maps/map_files/burma_shanstate.jpg>) where
there have been reports of outbreaks of HFMD resulting in school
closings there. One can't help but wonder if the 2 outbreaks (one in
Mae Sai Thailand and the other in Kengtung, Myanmar) are related. - Mod.MPP]
