A man in Thailand's northern province of Phichit was suspected of
contracting bird flu as he was found with high fever for 2 days after
contact with dead chickens, media here reported Friday [8 Feb 2008].
[The man], 32, was admitted to the Phichit Provincial Hospital at 11
pm (1600 GMT) Thursday night [7 Feb 2008], according to the news
network The Nation. He had high fever for 2 days after he found dead
chickens in a bag and took them home to feed his dogs. His wife
earlier took him to a clinic and the clinic sent him to the
provincial hospital on suspicion that he had contracted bird flu. His
blood sample has been sent for checking. The results of the blood
test would be known in 2 days.
On [24 Jan 2008], Thai authorities confirmed a new bird flu outbreak
had been detected at a farm in the northern province of Nakhon Sawan
neighboring Phichit, after laboratory tests found H5N1 virus in dead
chicken at the farm.

[Phichit province was declared a red zone for avian influenza
infection after an outbreak on 25 Jan 2008, one day after the
outbreak in Nakhon Sawan province (see prior PRO/MBDS postings listed
below). According to the earlier postings, 13 people who had contact
with avian influenza-infected poultry were being observed in Nakhon
Sawan's Chumsaeng district and 18 people in Phichit's Sak Lek
sub-district, the sites of recent avian influenza outbreaks (see
prior PRO/MBDS posting Avian influenza, human - MBDS region (03):
Thailand, surv. 20080127.0348). This case in Phichit province is the
1st suspected human case of avian influenza infection in Thailand in
2008. The laboratory test results for avian influenza virus are not known yet.
According to the Ministry of Public Health's avian influenza website,
as of 7 Feb 2008 there have been a cumulative total of 127 cases from
36 provinces under surveillance for reports of influenza or pneumonia
cases in the Avian Influenza Surveillance Network from the Provincial
Health Offices and Disease Prevention and Control Regional Offices.
It is unclear if this current case (from the newswire above) is
included in the 7 Feb 2008 update (see
<http://thaigcd.ddc.moph.go.th/download/AI_file/AI_case_report/AI_case_report_080207.pdf>).
