Fifth person dead from A/H5N1 flu
--------------------------
The Head of the Preventive Health and Environment Agency under the
Health Ministry of [25 Feb 2008] confirmed the 5th death from A/H5N1
flu in Vietnam so far this year [2008] [see discussion below, but
according to information currently available, there have been 5 cases
with 4 deaths confirmed by the Ministry of Health thus far this year
- 2008 - Mod.MPP].
The 5th [case] is a 23-year-old woman from Cam Khe District in the
northern province of Phu Tho, who saw the 1st symptoms of bird flu on
[14 Feb 2008] and was hospitalised to a local hospital on [19 Feb
2008]. The patient was transferred to the Central Hospital for
Infectious and Tropical Diseases in Hanoi on [21 Feb 2008].
Tests conducted by the Central Hospital for Infectious and Tropical
Diseases show that the patient caught type A/H5N1 flu. The patient
died on [25 Feb 2008].
Dr. Nguyen Huy Nga, Head of the Preventive Health and Environment
Agency, said there were dead poultry around the patient's house and
the patient's family slaughtered some dead chickens [one presumes
they mean the family slaughtered ill chickens - Mod.MPP].

Bird flu claims fourth Vietnam victim of 2008
------------------
Bird flu has killed a woman in northern Vietnam, the 4th person to
die of the H5N1 virus in the country this year [2008], officials said
Tuesday [26 Feb 2008].
[The 23-year-old woman], died Monday [25 Feb 2008] at a hospital in
Hanoi. Samples taken from her tested positive for H5N1, according to
Nguyen Huy Nga, director of the Health Ministry's Preventive Medicine
Department.
[She] was admitted to a local hospital near her home in Phu Tho
province, 100 kilometers northwest of Hanoi, after she fell ill on
[14 Feb 2008]. She was transferred to Hanoi on [21 Feb 2008] after
her condition worsened.
"She and other members of her family ate 5 chickens during Tet [the
lunar New Year holiday, which started [7 Feb 2008]," said Dang Van
Chuong, head of Phu Tho's animal health department. "One of the
chickens was sick."
Chuong said the rest of [her] family showed no symptoms of bird flu,
but local officials have taken samples from them to test for H5N1. No
bird flu outbreak in poultry has been reported in that province.
Fresh bird flu outbreaks have been detected in 7 provinces since the
beginning of this year, prompting local authorities to cull more than
20 000 ducks and chickens, Nga said.
Bird flu has infected 105 people in Vietnam and killed 51 of them
since it first appeared in Vietnam in late 2003.
H5N1 mainly affects poultry and wild birds, but can infect humans who
have close contact with sick fowl. Scientists fear that if it spreads
unchecked, the disease could mutate into a form which could be
transmitted between humans, leading to a worldwide pandemic that
could kill millions.

[As of 22 Feb 2008 there have been 3 human cases with 3 deaths
attributable to H5N1 infection in Viet Nam confirmed by WHO (see
<http://www.who.int/csr/disease/avian_influenza/country/cases_table_2008_02_22/en/index.html>).
These 3 cases include a 27-year-old male from Ninh Binh province, a
40-year-old man from Hai Duong province and a 32-year-old man from
Tuyen Quang province. In addition, there were newswire reports of a
7-year-old boy from Hai Duong province (still alive) that was
confirmed by the national laboratory to have H5N1 infection, and a
newswire report of a suspected case in a 40-year-old man from Bac
Lieu province, where no information on laboratory testing was
provided -- suggesting that H5N1 infection was probably ruled out,
since the Vietnamese Ministry of Health has been very transparent
about notifying confirmation of H5N1 infections (see PRO/MBDS posting
Avian influenza, human - MBDS region (09): Viet Nam, RFI
20080221.0703 for details on this suspected case) and now this case
in a 23-year-old woman from Phu Tho province. Of note is the mention
of ill and dead chickens around the patient's house, and the
slaughter and preparation of ill chickens by the case's family.
Again, it is noteworthy that prior to the identification of this
case, no outbreaks of H5N1 in avians had been reported from the
province of residence of this case.
More information on the status of the cases pending confirmation (the
7-year-old boy from Hai Duong, the 40-year-old man from Bac Lieu and
the most recent case -- the 23-year-old woman from Phu Tho) would be
greatly appreciated.
