Pig disease hits 2 more Vietnamese provinces

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) has recently
stricken Viet Nam's northern Thanh Hoa province and central Quang Nam
province, raising the total affected localities in the country to 3.
The disease has broken out in a district of Quang Nam, and hit 3000
pigs in 4 districts of Thanh Hoa, local newspaper Young People on
Friday [4 Apr 2008] quoted the provincial veterinary agencies as reporting.
However, the Department of Animal Health under the Vietnamese
Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has yet to confirm the
outbreak in Thanh Hoa. PRRS has hit pigs in the 2 central provinces
of Ha Tinh and Quang Nam, it said.
PRRS was 1st recognized in the United States in the mid-1980s and is
now present in most pig producing countries. The symptoms include
reproductive failure, pneumonia, and increased susceptibility to
secondary bacterial infection.

[The new outbreaks of PRRS in northern Thanh Hoa province and central
Quang Nam province were reported in the newswire above. The outbreak
from Thanh Hoa province has not been officially confirmed as yet. The
previous outbreak of PRRS was detected in 2 districts and Ha Tinh
city of Ha Tinh province (see prior PRO/MBDS posting Porcine
reproductive & respiratory syndrome - Viet Nam (03): Ha Tinh
20080331.1187). PRO/MBDS will greatly appreciate more information on
the outbreak in Than Hoa province from a reliable source.
