Blue ear pig epidemic spreads to northern region
------------------------------------------------
The Veterinary Department has confirmed Thai Binh as the 1st northern
province hit by the blue ear pig epidemic early this month [April 2008].

The epidemic has [since] then spread to 470 communes and wards in 6
other provinces and cities, including Ha Tinh, Thanh Hoa, Quang Nam,
Nghe An, Lam Dong, and Thua Thien-Hue.

Most recently, on [16 Apr 2008] the epidemic was detected in 36 other
communes and wards nationwide with 16 231 pigs infected. As a result,
more than 22 293 pigs have been newly culled, bringing the total
number to 171 294.

On [10 Apr 2008], the 1st suspected cases were detected in Nguyet
Lang hamlet, Minh Khai commune, Vu Thu district in Thai Binh
province. On [16 Apr 2008], samples taken from sick pigs in the
hamlet tested positive for the blue ear pig disease. By 5 pm the same
day [16 Apr 2008], all 140 pigs in the hamlet were culled.

The epidemic has become more complicated in Thanh Hoa province,
affecting 357 communes in 19 districts and towns. As many as 143 129
infected pigs have been culled.

Deputy head of the Veterinary Department Hoang Van Nam warned that
the epidemic is likely to spread far and wide across the country. He
attributed the quick spread to the inefficiency during the culling of
infected pigs and sterilisation work.
