Vietnamese girl in hospital with bird flu -TV
-----------------------------------------------------
A 5-year-old Vietnamese girl who ate poultry has been infected with
bird flu, the 1st human case reported in the country this year
[2009], state-run television said on Tuesday [6 Jan 2009].
The patient from the northern province of Thanh Hoa has been
hospitalised after eating poultry, and dead poultry was also found in
her neighbourhood, the Vietnam Television station said in its noon broadcast.
Tests last Saturday [3 Jan 2009] confirmed the girl had the H5N1 bird
flu virus, it said.
Last month bird flu resurfaced in poultry in the north, killing ducks
and chickens.
Five Vietnamese died of bird flu in 2008 out of 6 reported H5N1
infections and all were found in northern Vietnam during the 1st
quarter of the year [January to March 2008], when spring cool
temperature allows the virus to thrive best.
The H5N1 strain has killed 247 people globally among the 391
confirmed cases of infection since 2003, according to the World
Health Organisation.
Before the latest case in Vietnam, WHO said Vietnam had 106
infections, the 2nd highest number of cases among 15 countries with
known human cases after Indonesia.

[The 5 year old girl from Thanh Hoa Province has been reported to be
the 1st human case of H5N1 avian influenza infection in Viet Nam
during 2009. Although the above newswire mentions that the girl
consumed possibly H5N1 infected poultry before the onset of avian
influenza symptoms and that dead poultry was detected in her
neighbourhood, the results of laboratory investigation on the dead
poultry in her neighbourhood is not provided. Of note, there have not
been recent reports of H5N1 outbreaks among poultry in Thanh Hoa
Province. The most recent report of H5N1 infected poultry was
reported on 25 Dec 2008 in Thai Nguyen province (see prior PRO/MBDS
posting Avian influenza - MBDS region: Viet Nam, FAO 20090101.0002)
According to the most recent report on confirmed cases of H5N1
infection from World Health Organization (WHO) dated 16 Dec 2008,
available at:
there were 5 cases and 5 deaths confirmed in Viet Nam during 2008
(not 6 cases as mentioned in the above newswire) and a total of 106
reported cases with 52 fatalities since 2003. (Note, as the total
number of reported cases of H5N1 infection in Viet Nam mentioned in
the above newswire is 106, in agreement with the total number of
cases according to the WHO website, one assumes that the mention of 6
human cases of H5N1 during 2008 is a newswire error). A total of 391
cases and 247 deaths attributable to H5N1 infection had reported from
worldwide since 2003.
Information on the 5th confirmed case of avian influenza infection in
Viet Nam during 2008 was reported to UN Food and Agriculture
Organisation (FAO) and WHO is available at the prior PRO/MBDS posting
Avian influenza, human - MBDS region (15): Viet Nam, FAO, WHO 20080320.1069.
The last report of human avian influenza infection in the MBDS region
during 2008 was a 19-year-old man from Kandal Steung District, Kandal
Province, Cambodia who was the 1st avian influenza case reported in
Cambodia during 2008 and the 8th case of avian influenza infection
since early 2005 (see prior PRO/MBDS posting Avian influenza, human -
MBDS region (20): Cambodia 20081212.3904).
