As of 06:00 GMT, 9 May 2009, 29 countries have officially reported
3440 cases of influenza A(H1N1) infection.
Mexico has reported 1364 laboratory confirmed human cases of
infection, including 45 deaths. The United States has reported 1639
laboratory confirmed human cases, including 2 deaths. Canada has
reported 242 laboratory confirmed human cases, including one death.
The following countries have reported laboratory confirmed cases with
no deaths - Argentina (1), Australia (1), Austria (1), Brazil (6),
China, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (1), Colombia (1),
Costa Rica (1), Denmark (1), El Salvador (2), France (12), Germany
(11), Guatemala (1), Ireland (1), Israel (7), Italy (6), Japan (3),

Status of Influenza A(H1N1) in the Americas Region
-----------------
Two new countries, Argentina and Panama, have confirmed cases of
Influenza A(H1N1). The total confirmed cases of influenza A(H1N1)
recorded in the Americas is as follows:
- Mexico has reported 1626 confirmed cases, 48 deaths;
- USA, 2254 confirmed cases with 2 deaths;
- Canada, 280 confirmed cases with 1 death;
- Costa Rica, 1 confirmed case with 1 death;
- Brazil, 6 confirmed cases;
- El Salvador, 2 confirmed cases;
- Panama, 3 confirmed case;
- Argentina, 1 confirmed case.
- Colombia, 1 confirmed case;
- Guatemala, 1 confirmed case.
* The World Health Organization maintains pandemic alert of Phase 5.
There is no evidence of sustained community level human to human
transmission outside of the Americas.
Status of Influenza A(H1N1) in other Regions
- As of today [9 May 2009], 29 countries have officially reported
3440 cases of influenza A(H1N1) infection.
- The following countries have reported laboratory confirmed cases
with no deaths: Australia (1), Austria (1), China, Hong Kong Special
Administrative Region (1), Denmark (1), France (12), Germany (11),
Ireland (1), Israel (7), Italy (6), Japan (3), Netherlands (3), New
Zealand (5), Poland (1), Portugal (1), Republic of Korea (3), Spain
(88), Sweden (1), Switzerland (1) and United Kingdom (34).
[News reports in Brazil say that the mother of the 29-year-old
student infected by a 21-year-old student who returned to Rio de
Janeiro from Cancun, Mexico, on 2 May, was hospitalized on Sat 9 May
as a suspect case. Test results will be known on Tue 12 May. - Mod.JW]

[To summarize the current situation as of 9 May 2009, there have been
a total of 3440 cases and 48 deaths of influenza A (H1N1) infection
officially reported to WHO/PAHO coming from 29 countries, up from
2500 confirmed cases and 46 deaths from 25 countries yesterday (8 May
2009). The newly added countries are Argentina, Australia, Japan and
Panama. According to the PAHO update, a fatality has been reported
from Costa Rica: a 53 year old male with preexisting diabetes and
chronic lung disease. According to newswires, there has been a new
fatality reported in the USA: a 30-year-old male with preexisting
heart disease. Newswires also mention a confirmed case in Norway and
the 1st locally transmitted case in Italy.
The USA has officially reported 2254 laboratory confirmed cases
coming from 44 states (compared with 1639 cases from 43 states on 8
May 2009), and 2 deaths (one in a Mexican child with pre-existing
illness visiting in the USA and a 2nd in a resident of Texas with
known pre-existing illness). Canada has reported 280 cases from 9
provinces with one death in an individual with pre-existing illness,
up from 242 cases and one death reported from 9 provinces on 8 May
2009. Mexico has reported 1626 confirmed cases with 48 deaths
(compared with 1364 cases and 45 deaths on 8 May 2009.
