Influenza A (H5N1) is not transmitted from human to human

Yesterday afternoon [14 Apr 2010], at a meeting of the National
Steering Committee for pandemic influenza control and prevention, Dr
Tran Nhu Duong, Deputy Director of the National Institute of Hygiene
and Epidemiology confirmed that influenza A (H5N1) has not been
transmitted from human to human.
The investigation of the Institute on 2 cases of influenza A (H5N1)
in Na Tao village, Nhu Co commune, Cho Moi District, Bac Kan province
did not detect human to human virus transmission.
Reports of two investigation teams of the Institute in Bac Kan showed
that the two patients were living about 100 meters apart, and they
had never been in direct contact with each other.
All 33 people who had contact with the patients, including relatives,
visitors, neighbors, nurses, and physicians, were tested and
monitored for 16 days. There has been no case with symptoms of the
disease. All the test results were negative.

[According to the press report above, Dr. Tran Nhu Duong, Deputy
Director of the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology
confirmed that there were 2 confirmed cases of A (H5N1) in Bac Kan
province in the north of Viet Nam (see: Avian influenza, human (29):
Viet Nam (BK), cluster, susp. 20100412.1188, Avian influenza, human
(28): Viet Nam (BK), RFI 20100405.1092). He also reported that the
investigation of his institute concluded that there has not been
human to human virus transmission in Bac Kan and all 33 suspected
cases were negative for influenza A (H5N1).
The 2 confirmed cases in Bac Kan province bring the total of
confirmed A (H5N1) cases in Viet Nam in 2010 to 7. The cumulative
number of confirmed human cases of avian influenza A (H5N1) reported
to the WHO, dated 9 Apr 2010, is available at

There have been 117 cases and 59 fatalities reported from Viet Nam to
the WHO since 2003, and a total of 5 cases and 2 fatalities have been
reported since January 2010. The 2 new confirmed cases from Bac Kan
