A 27-year-old man in eastern Cambodia has died of bird flu, the
country's 1st fatality this year [2010] and its 8th since the virus
started to sweep through Asia almost 7 years ago.

Cambodia's Health Ministry said in a statement issued jointly
Wednesday [21 Apr 2010] with the World Health Organization that the
man in Prey Veng province died Saturday [17 Apr 2010]. It was the
country's 10th human case of the disease.

The statement says there have been 494 laboratory-confirmed cases of
the disease in 15 countries since 2003, with 293 fatalities. The
Cambodian man's death was the 11th worldwide this year [2010].

The Health Ministry said it was investigating the case, and stepping
up a campaign for preventative health measures.

[According to the newswire above, Cambodia's Health Ministry stated
that the case mentioned in the newswire is the 1st fatality in
Cambodia attributable to avian influenza A (H5N1) infection in 2010.
The fatal case in the newswire above brings the total number of cases
and deaths in Cambodia to 10 cases and 8 deaths.

According to the WHO update dated 21 Apr 2010, there have been 9
cases with 7 deaths attributable to H5N1 infection in Cambodia (see
<http://www.who.int/csr/disease/avian_influenza/country/cases_table_2010_04_21/en/index.html>).

The most recently reported H5N1 infection among poultry in Cambodia
was from neighboring Takeo province during the 1st week of February
2010 (see prior PRO/MBDS posting Avian influenza - MBDS Region (09):
Cambodia (Takeo), controls 20100214.0520).

So far, the case is under investigation by the Health Ministry. More
information from reliable sources on the results of the investigation
would be highly appreciated by PRO/MBDS.
