Cholera has killed at least 6 of the 347 known cases in Niger, particularly in Niamey and Tillabery, the Nigerian Minister of Health, Soumana Sanda, has said. However, he said that the situation was under control.
Sanda said the development was being monitored by the authorities. Immediately after the confirmation of the 1st cases of cholera on 30 May 2011, health authorities have taken steps to contain and control the epidemic, according to the minister.
Several isolation camps for patients have been built in the Gamkalle district of Niamey, in the rural town of Libore and N'Dounga, the areas most affected by the disease. Multi-disciplinary teams have also been sent into the field to cater to the sick and educate the population.
Sanda on Thursday [16 Jun 2011] visited the isolation sites accompanied by Niger representatives of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and UN Children's Fund (UNICEF).

[The authorities in Niger have been responding to a cholera outbreak in Tillaberi region since May 2011. Despite the large number of cases reported in the past 3 weeks, the authorities have indicated the situation is under control after a national response was initiated.
