Cholera outbreaks in the Republic of Congo
------------------------------------------
Cholera outbreaks are being reported along the Congo River, affecting
the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Republic of Congo.
In the Republic of Congo, between 14 Jun 2011 and 20 Jul 2011, a
total of 181 suspected cases including 6 deaths have been reported
from 4 provinces (Brazzaville, Cuvette, Likouala, and Plateaux) with
a case fatality of 3 percent. 4 cases from Brazzaville and Likouala
have been laboratory confirmed with cholera. There is high risk of
the epidemic further spreading along the Congo River.
In response to the outbreaks, the government of the Republic of
Congo, international organizations, and non-government organizations
have intensified surveillance, case management, and health promotion
activities in the affected areas, in addition to setting up cholera
treatment centres at selected sites.

[The current cholera outbreak in the Republic of Congo is reported to
have originated from the Democratic Republic of Congo since the 2
countries share the Congo River along the international border.
Cross-border surveillance needs to be strengthened in the 2 countries
so that measures are instituted in time to prevent cross-border
transmission of epidemics.
