In mid-July 2011 during the rainy season on a river during a canoe trip in northern Mali, someone developed signs of cholera: severe diarrhea and vomiting. A medical analysis later confirmed that it was cholera. The patient died after a few days, but in the meantime, several other people were infected. The disease spread, and the epidemic took hold. Several villages were affected.

Within 10 days, 223 cases and 11 deaths from cholera were recorded in the region of Mopti, located in the north, and 8 deaths in the Timbuktu region in the far north. In total, 19 people lost their lives.

As soon as the 1st cases of cholera were reported, health authorities launched an operation in Mali: Response Prevention. Additional health kits were supplied to the health centres. Health advice is being provided by itinerant staff, and patients are treated free of charge. According to the National Board of Health, before the end of this week [week ending 31 Jul 2011], the situation will be totally under control.

[The cholera outbreak affecting 2 states (Timbuktu and Mopti) in Mali was precipitated by the rainy season. The authorities are optimistic that the measures instituted will contain the outbreak soon.
