Encephalitis has claimed the lives of 2 children, taking the death
toll in the viral infection in eastern Uttar Pradesh to 643 this year
[2011]. The 2 children died in the last 2 days, Additional Director
(health) Diwakar Prasad said today [30 Dec 2011].

As many as 82 people suffering from encephalitis are undergoing
treatment in various government hospitals in Basti and Gorakhpur, he
said.

[The numbers of encephalitis cases in children continue to climb in
Uttar Pradesh state. The year-to-date case count as of 20 Dec 2011 (10
days ago; see ProMED-mail archive no. 20111220.3643) was 635 and now
has reached 643, as indicated in the report above. This report does
not indicate the etiological agent involved in these cases, but
previous reports attribute them to Japanese encephalitis and other
undiagnosed virus infections.
