- Brazil (national). 14 Feb 2012. According to the total provided by the Ministry of Health, Brazil registered a 62 per cent decline in dengue cases in the beginning of 2012. During the period 1 Jan-11 Feb, there were 40 486 dengue cases registered versus 106 373 cases in 2011. There was a reduction of 86 per cent in serious dengue cases in the entire country, from 1345 in 2011 to 183 in 2012, and 66 per cent reduction in dengue deaths from 95 to 32.

- Brazil (cases by state). 15 Feb 2012. Between 1 Jan-11 Feb [2012], in Brazil there were 40 486 reported dengue cases. Of these, 75 per cent were in concentrated in Rio de Janeiro (4275), Minas Gerais (3531); Pernambuco (3495); Tocantins (3450); Para (3304); Bahia (2743); Goias (2690); Sao Paulo (2590); Ceara (2322), and Espirito Santo (1982). The most worrying situation is in Bahia state, which has 22 municipalities at risk of an epidemic of the disease.

- Brazil (Alagoas). 15 Feb 2012. The office of Epidemiological Surveillance of the Alagoas state Secretariat of Health in its Technical Note of 10 Feb 2012 reported that as of that date 60 of the 102 municipalities in Alagoas reported 867 suspected dengue cases. Compared to the same period in 2011, this number indicates an increase of 19 per cent in the number of dengue cases in Alagoas. In 18 municipalities, 38 suspected serious dengue cases were reported, representing a 36 per cent increase compared to 2011. Up to now, 3 suspected dengue deaths have been registered, with one death discarded.

- Brazil (Rio de Janeiro city, Rio de Janeiro state). 17 Feb 2012. The minister of health of Brazil, Alexandre Padilha, said that Rio de Janeiro runs the risk of registering one of the worst dengue epidemics this year [2012] in its history. The number of dengue cases at the beginning of the year reached 3499, versus 2322 last year [2011]. However, the Minister stated that there have been no deaths.

- Brazil (Sinop, Mato Grosso state). 19 Feb 2012. The 1st case of DHF in Sinop this year [2012] has been confirmed. The Mato Grosso Secretariat of Health stated that from 1 Jan-mid-Feb [2012], 326 dengue cases have been reported in Sinop municipality and that Sinop is among the 91 cities [in Brazil] at risk of the disease [based on _Aedes aegypti_ abundance_].

- Brazil (Tres Lagoas, Mato Grosso do Sul state). 15 Feb 2012. In one month and 14 days, Tres Lagoas registered 746 dengue cases. Of these, 170 were confirmed as positive and 62 were negative. This represents an increase from the 138 confirmed cases registered the previous week.

- Brazil (Mato Grosso do Sul state). 16 Feb 2012. The 1st suspected case of dengue virus type 4 [infection] emerged this week and left the municipal and state Secretariats of Health on alert, according to reports published on 16 [Feb 2012]. The affected person is a resident of Campo Grande. In the 1st 6 weeks of this year [2012], 1760 dengue cases were reported in the state. This number is well below that of last year [2011].

- Brazil (Rio Branco, Acre state). 15 Feb 2012. There is a 90 per cent reduction in reported dengue cases [in Acre], in view that as of epidemiological week 06/2012 [9-15 Feb 2012] there were 1302 reported cases, and for the same period in the previous year [2011] 13 322 cases had been reported, numbers that show the excellent results of the operation "War Against Dengue."

- Brazil (Ceara state). 15 Feb 2012. Information from investigations indicates that there are 2322 people with [dengue] disease in the entire state of Ceara. According to the latest bulletin issued by the state Secretariat of Health on 10 Feb [2012], Juazeiro da Norte has 267 cases and Fortaleza has 260. Of cities of more than 100 000 population, these 2 cities are among the 10 with the most dengue cases.

- Brazil (Itabuna, Bahia state). 15 Feb 2012. This year [2012], Itabuna has reported more than 100 dengue cases and is in 4th place in Bahia state for the number of cases. In the same period last year [2011], the municipality reported less than 60 cases of the disease.

- Brazil (Palmas, Tocantins state). 14 Feb 2012. [Palmas], the capital of Tocantins state has the highest incidence rate of dengue disease, with 743.7 cases per 100 000 population. "A rate of above 300 cases per 100 000 population is seen in an epidemic situation," explained he minister of health, Alexandre Padilha. Tocantins is the state with the greatest incidence, with 249.4 per 100 000 population. The national incidence is 21.2 per 100 000 population.

- Paraguay (national). 14 Feb 2012. An increase in dengue disease is disquieting, according to the director of Health Surveillance of the Ministry of Public Health, Ivan Allende, who reported 265 confirmed cases during this year [2012]. The reported possible [suspected] dengue cases are around 1000 people, however.

- Bolivia (national). 18 Feb 2012. Martin Maturano, deputy minister of health, said that the dengue epidemic extends to include Trinidad, Beni [department; state or province equivalent], and Yacuiba in Tarija department. In Trinidad 170 cases have been registered and 10 in Yacuiba, as well as a death that awaits confirmation. The Ministry of Health confirmed that since October 2011, nearly 1800 cases of the disease have been registered and there are 5400 suspected cases. About 65 per cent of the patients are from the Santa Cruz region. In the country, 16 [dengue] deaths have been confirmed: 6 in Cochabamba, 6 in Santa Cruz, and 4 in Beni.

- Guatemala (Coatepeque, Quetzaltenango department). 16 Feb 2012. The public health authorities of Coatepeque, Quetzaltenango, announced that so far this year [2012], 25 cases of dengue fever have been detected.

- Mexico (Merida, Yucatan state). 14 Feb 2012. The number of dengue cases in the capital [Merida] of Yucatan have decreased by 40 per cent [over last year (2011)]. Up until today [14 Feb 2012], 635 confirmed dengue cases have been registered, of which 280 are hemorrhagic [DHF? That would be a very high proportion of total cases. - Mod.TY]

- Philippines (Southern Mindanao). 17 Feb 2012. Dr Lalaine Calonzo, acting head of the General Santos City Integrated Health Services Office (CIHSO), said Thursday [16 Feb 2012] they have so far recorded 32 confirmed cases of dengue within the city's 26 barangays [neighborhoods]. She said most of the confirmed dengue cases were recorded in Barangays City Heights, Labangal, Apopong, and San Isidro, where several housing subdivisions and crowded residential communities are situated.

- Fiji (Western division). 16 Feb 2012. A Fiji woman has died of dengue fever following last month's [January 2012] severe flooding in the Western Division. The Fiji Times reports the woman as having died on Sunday [12 Feb 2012] , after the Lautoka Hospital failed to admit her 4 days earlier. The Health Ministry says there are now 23 cases of dengue fever recorded during the post-flood period in the Western Division.

- Australia (Cairns, Queensland state). 15 Feb 2012. Far Northern health officials have warned residents of dengue after 2 cases at Manunda [suburb of Cairns] were confirmed yesterday [14 Feb 2012]. The man and woman are the 1st cases of locally acquired dengue in the city for almost a year, although there have been 9 other patients treated in Cairns this year [2012] who contracted the disease overseas.
