- Sri Lanka (national). 14 Apr 2012. The Epidemiology Unit of Sri Lanka's Ministry of Health said 9317 dengue cases and 38 deaths were reported in the 1st 3 months of 2012, against 3103 in the 1st quarter of 2011. The highest number occurred in January [2012], when 3892 cases were reported, followed by 3004 in February, and 2421 in March.

- Pakistan (Karachi, Sindh province). 13 Apr 2012. Dengue epidemic is once again raising its ugly head in Karachi as more than 100 patients have been confirmed dengue-positive in the city's different hospitals so far, whereas Sindh Health Department insists that there are only 34 cases on record, Geo News reported.

- Paraguay (national). 14 Apr 2012. Dengue has left 11 dead and affected 4600 people in the last 4 months in Paraguay, according to a bulletin issued this Saturday [14 Apr 2012] by the Office of Health Surveillance of the Ministry of Pubic Health. The fatal cases and those with clinical signs were confirmed by laboratory tests in public assistance centers after processing 11 000 reports of suspected cases from ill individuals and hospital physicians, the health report indicated. Most of the cases were detected in the Asuncion area and towns in the interior of the country, especially those in Amambay department (province), along the border with Brazil.

- Ecuador (national). 14 Apr 2012. A 4-year-old child could be a new victim of DHF. If confirmed, this new death brings the number of dengue fatalities in the country to 7 (3 in Guayas, 3 in Manabi, and 1 in Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas). In its last report issued on 11 Apr 2012, the Ministry of Public Health indicated that there are 4613 cases of classical dengue fever and 70 of DHF (termed serious by the authorities) in 14 epidemiological weeks this year [2012], for a total of 4683 people with the disease.

- Peru (Chimbote, Santa province, Ancash region). 9 Apr 2012. The situation is worrying. The number of dengue [virus] infected people was 6 as of yesterday [8 Apr 2012], stated the Director of the Health Network of Pacifico Norte [North Pacific], Maria Diaz Gil. "We have confirmed that 2 more people have dengue, one of whom is pregnant, but all are in a good state of health," she said. To this number are added 86 cases of people with high fevers whose blood samples are in the National Institute of Health awaiting laboratory confirmation.

- Brazil (Corumba, Mato Grosso do Sul state). 13 Apr 2012. In Mato Grosso do Sul state 7 cities are at risk of a dengue epidemic. Health Surveillance in Corumba as of yesterday, 12 Apr 2012, registered 501 cases of dengue in the 1st months of 2012 and notes a possible epidemic in the city. The number of patients began to increase at the end of February 2012 with the highest incidence on the days 25-31 Mar [2012], with 101 cases.

- Brazil (Mato Grosso do Sul state). 12 Apr 2012. From 1 Jan 2012 up to 12 Apr 2012, there are 12 703 cases of [dengue] disease. Of this total 53 were reported as serious dengue cases. In the entire state 2 [dengue] deaths were confirmed and another 2 are under investigation.

- Brazil (Alagoas state). 13 Apr 2012. In Alagoas, 14 municipalities have dengue epidemics and another 28 are in an alert situation, according to the bulletin issued by the state Secretariat of Health. From January 2012 up to the beginning of last week, 4286 cases of the disease were reported, which represents an increase of 11.4 per cent in relation to the same period last year [2011]. Just in Maceio, 1028 cases were registered, that is 24 per cent of the dengue reports made in the entire state, which puts the capital on alert.

- Brazil (Itabuna, Bahia state). 11 Apr 2012. The Director of Epidemiological Surveillance in Bahia, Maria Aparecida Araujo, confirmed that Itabuna is having a dengue outbreak with nearly 1300 reported cases this year [2012].

- Brazil (Ilheus, Bahia state). 13 Apr 2012. Ilheus has a reduction in dengue cases. In contrast to neighboring Itabuna, that suffers a dengue outbreak, the number of dengue cases in Ilheus registers a reduction of more than 40 per cent this year [2012] in comparison with the same period in 2011. From 1 Jan-13 Apr 2012], 190 cases were reported. In the same period last year [2011], there were 252 cases.

- Brazil (Rio de Janeiro city, Rio de Janeiro state). 9 Apr 2012. The capital of Rio de Janeiro state has 31 176 dengue cases since 1 Jan 2012, according to the weekly bulletin issued by the municipal Secretariat of Health released this 9 Apr 2012. This 14th week, up to last Saturday (7 Apr 2012), 2217 more cases of dengue were registered, without any deaths. According to the municipal Secretariat of Health, the samples taken [indicate] that most of the cases (81.1 per cent) were dengue [virus] type 4. This year [2012] 6 dengue deaths are now confirmed, whereas in the same period last year [2011], the municipality had 23 [dengue] deaths.

- Brazil (Piaui state). 11 Apr 2012. Data issued by the state Secretariat of Health indicate that there was a reduction of 50.4 per cent in the reported number of [dengue] cases in the 1st week of April 2012, in relation to the same period last year. From January to date, there are 2749 dengue cases registered, whereas in 2011 the number was 5542. Teresina is in 1st place in the ranking with 1528 reported cases.

- Brazil (Sao Paulo city, Sao Paulo state). 11 Apr 2012. The residents of Francisco Morato, in the greater Sao Paulo city area, are terrified about the dengue outbreak that hit the Jardim Elisa neighborhood. Blood samples were collected from the residents and sent for tests. Up to now, 25 tests have been done with 23 positive results. In 2 months, 150 suspected cases were registered.

- Bolivia (national). 10 Apr 2012. The Vice Minister of Health, Martin Maturano, yesterday [9 Apr 2012] stated that the dengue epidemic was under control in the entire country. According to data from the Vice Minister, the number of dengue cases is around 2500. According to data from last month [March 2012], the number of confirmed cases nationally was 2431 and 20 deaths from the epidemic are reported. Santa Cruz has about 55 per cent of the nationally registered dengue cases with 23 per cent in Cochabamba, 11 per cent in La Paz, and 9 per cent in Beni departments [state equivalents]. Chuquisaca, Tarija, and Pando register less than one per cent.

- Niue Island. 12 Apr 2012. Health authorities on Niue are confident that they are on top of the latest dengue outbreak that has infected 20 people to date. The chief medical officer, Dr Eddie Akau'ola, says this outbreak began about 3 weeks ago but they believe they have been able to contain it. He says it is peaking now and they expect a decline in a week or 2. Dr Akau'ola says none of the cases have been too serious.
