- Brazil (Rio de Janeiro city and state). 18 Apr 2012. With 40 252 dengue cases this year [2012], the city of Rio faces an imminent dengue epidemic. According to the municipal Secretariat of Health, the municipality currently has 296.5 cases per 100 000 population per month. Most cases are caused by dengue virus type 4, which entered the country in 2010. In 3 areas of the city, however, there is an outbreak of the disease: Campo Grande and vicinity (with 657.5 cases per 100 000 population per month), Madureira and vicinity (516.9), and Bangu and vicinity (334.3). In the entire state, the number of suspected cases is 53 689, [with] 10 confirmed fatalities, 9 of which were in the capital.

- Brazil (Mato Grosso state). 20 Apr 2012. According to results of the latest survey released by the state Secretariat of Health, to date there have been 14 574 dengue cases registered in the state. Of this total, 67 were reported as serious cases. There are 2 deaths from the disease and another 3 are under investigation. The numbers are nearly 300 per cent above those registered in 2011. During this same period in 2011 there were 5153 reported cases of the disease in the state.

- Brazil (Cuiaba, Mato Grosso state). 18 Apr 2012. The Public Ministry stated that between 1 and 7 Apr 2012, 2276 dengue cases were registered in Cuiaba. "The data reveal the existence of 128 new cases in just 7 days, without counting those not reported," stated the promoter of justice Alexandre de Matos Guedes.

- Brazil (Alagoas state). 22 Apr 2012. Dengue is now epidemic in 14 municipalities and the advance is worrying. At least 28 cities in the state are on maximum alert status and 4500 cases have been totaled by the state Secretariat of Health.

- Brazil (Paraiba state). 17 Apr 2012. The Paraiba population is on alert due to the risk of a dengue epidemic in the state. In the 1st 4 months of the year [2012], 1321 dengue cases were registered. This number represents an 83.3 per cent reduction in relation to the 1st quarter of 2011. In all of last year [2011] there were 6916 reported cases.

- Argentina (Salta province). 18 Apr 2012. The Buenos Aires Ministry of Health has promised to send human resources specialized in epidemiology to deal with the dengue outbreak registered in Salvador Mazza, Salta province. More than 50 dengue cases have been confirmed in the border area of Salvador Mazza while on the other side of the border, near Yacuiba, Bolivia, there are more than 1100 suspected and 75 confirmed cases.

- Peru (national). 24 Mar 2012. Up to epidemiological week 12 (24 Mar 2012) the National Epidemiological Network has reported 2079 laboratory confirmed dengue cases and 6579 probable cases. Of these, 7112 (82 per cent) are without symptoms of alarm, 1489 (17.1 per cent) are with symptoms of alarm, and 57 (0.6 per cent) are serious dengue cases. The 87 per cent of cases reported by district health agencies are Ucayali (39 per cent), Jaen (23 per cent), Loreto (17 per cent), Junin (4 per cent), and San Martin (4 per cent). The circulating dengue [virus] serotypes are 1, 2, and 3.

- Ecuador (national). 20 Apr 2012. At least 7 people died [of dengue virus infections] with 5140 people infected, 74 of whom are in serious condition, due to a dengue epidemic that affects Ecuador since January [2012], stated the Ministry of Health. The deaths are registered in the coastal provinces of Guayas (3 cases) and Manabi (4 cases). Between January and mid-April of 2011, there were 1533 cases of classical dengue fever and 20 serious ones, of which one died.

- Philippines (Zamboanga city, Mindanao). 19 Apr 2012. Dr Rodel Agbulos disclosed that they have documented 547 dengue cases from 1 Jan-17 Apr [2012], as compared to 200 cases during the same period last year [2011], or a whopping a 173.5 per cent increase. In 2011, 8 died but only 4 in 2012. Agbulos said areas with high reported dengue cases are barangays of Tumaga, Tugbungan, San Roque, Tetuan, Guiwan, and Santa Maria, which are located within a 7 km [4 mi] radius.

- Sri Lanka (national). 22 Apr 2012. Suspected dengue fever cases steadily swelled during the 1st quarter of this year [2012] and reached 10 042 cases by last Thursday [19 Apr 2012], leaving 42 dead. The number was expected to rise further with more cases adding each day, epidemiology sources told The Nation yesterday [21 Apr 2012]. About 50.7 per cent of dengue cases were reported from the Western Province. According to the latest Epidemiology Report, updated on 19 Apr [2012], the highest number of suspected cases was from the Colombo District, which recorded a cumulative number of 2478 cases in the 1st 3 months of the year, with 17 deaths.

- Indonesia (Tangerang, Banten province, West Java). 18 Apr 2012. The Tangerang regency Health Agency has warned residents to remain vigilant as dengue disease have spiked in the region. Some 49 Tangerang regency residents suffered from dengue fever from January-April [2012[ but no one has died.

- Indonesia (Malang, East Java). 17 Apr 2012. Health officials in Malang, East Java, are carrying out a citywide campaign to tackle dengue fever after 31 people were reported to have contracted the mosquitoborne [viral] infectious disease so far this year [2012].

- Reunion Island. 17 Apr 2012. Today, health authorities announced the presence of a new dengue case in the western sector, bringing to 10 the number of people infected with this virus on the island. Over the past 2 weeks, 2 cases of dengue were detected in Saint Denis.
