Announcing: ProMED Regional Networks
---------------------------------------
Internet-based networks covering emerging infectious diseases with a
focus on specific geographic regions.
ProMED-mail would like to introduce our subscribers to other
ProMED-mail initiatives that have a focus on specific geographic
regions in the world. These regional initiatives involve separate
internet-based reporting systems for emerging and reemerging diseases
of humans, animals, and plants.
Each one of these systems follows the norms, principles, and
objectives of ProMED, but each has a focus on disease events
occurring within the countries of their region. They serve to
facilitate an information exchange that allows for greater discussion
of topics of special interest to the countries of interest in those
regions than can be supported on the general ProMED-mail list.
Because the original ProMED-mail list is worldwide, to keep the
number of postings to an acceptable level for the wide range of
subscribers, we may omit reporting outbreaks of diseases considered
to be endemic in countries, but these may well be of interest to
people residing in the region where these outbreaks are occurring.
For this reason, ProMED-mail in collaboration with HealthMap, and
with the assistance of Rockefeller Foundation, The Global Health
Security Initiative, and Google.org, has decided to develop these
Regional Initiatives.
There are presently 6 Regional Networks (listed below in
chronological order of launching):
ProMED-ESP: In Spanish, with a focus on Latin America and other
Spanish speaking countries ProMED-PORT: In Portuguese, with a focus
on Brazil, Latin America,
and other Portuguese speaking countries ProMED-RUS: In Russian, with
a focus on the former Soviet Union countries PRO/MBDS: In English,
with a focus on the Mekong Basin Countries (Cambodia, China [Guanxi
and Yunnan], Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam) ProMED-FRA: In
French, with a focus on West Africa (the ECOWAS member countries)
ProMED-EAFR: In English, with a focus on East Africa (the EAC member
countries)
Postings from each of these networks can be found at the ProMED-mail
website (<http://www.promedmail.org>) by clicking on the links found
on the right hand side of the page (Flags of the mother tongue
country for Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, and French, and logos for
the Mekong Basin and East African Initiatives).
Reports of events of interest in surrounding countries in each of the
regions are also covered as the borders between countries are not
impervious to disease transmission. There are plans to expand to
additional regions and to add additional languages in the future.
Reports to be accepted for posting in each of the Regional Initiative
lists include the same as for the general ProMED-mail list: direct
reports from subscribers, news stories (in English as well as other
languages that are specific to the lists -- Spanish, Portuguese,
Russian, and French) and other Internet-based sources of information.
Additional languages specific to the Mekong Basin countries are under
development at present. No anonymous reports will be accepted,
although if an individual subscriber requests to have their name
withheld, we will honor that request.
We welcome subscribers with interests in events in these regions and
look forward to a very fruitful and exciting collaboration.
To subscribe, please go to the ProMED-mail website at
<http://www.promedmail.org> and click on subscribe/unsubscribe, and
then subscribe to the list(s) of interest. If there are difficulties
in using the online subscription, please send an email to
<promed@promedmail.org> requesting assistance.
Please share this information with friends and colleagues who might
also be interested in subscribing to one or more of our Regional
Initiative lists. Remember, the strength of ProMED and all of its
initiatives is a function of its subscribers. You are all very
important to us.
